Synopsis

OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing) is the most powerful Business Intelligence tool currently available and Microsoft's Analysis Manager makes OLAP cubes incredibly easy to build and deploy. However the real power of OLAP lies in its ability to help you solve real-life business problems; to release that power you need to use the language that controls the cubes and allows them to be queried. That language is MDX (Multi Dimensional eXpressions). "Fast Track to MDX" gives you all the necessary background to let you write useful, powerful MDX expressions and introduces the most frequently used MDX functions and constructs. No prior knowledge is assumed and examples are used throughout the book to rapidly develop your MDX skills to the point where you can solve real business problems.Mark Whitehorn, co-author of the best-selling "Inside Relational Databases", is renowned for his knowledge of database systems and the lucidity of his writing. Robert Zare is a Program Manager for Analysis Services at Microsoft: his inspiring talks on MDX sowed the seeds from which this book grew.Mosha Pasumansky was one of the authors of the OLEDB for OLAP specification that defined the MDX language and later he was the developer in charge of the first implementation of MDX in the Microsoft OLAP Services 7.0 product. He is currently the development lead of the Analysis Services engine team.Second Edition - It was the clarity, precision and sheer readability of the first edition that made it a best-seller. With that firmly in mind the authors have left the original 18 chapters intact (apart from minor updates); meaning that the second edition remains the best introduction to MDX for SQL Server 2000 that is available. What they have done is to add three brand new chapters. These introduce the topic of recursion in MDX, walk the reader through the process of creating recursive expressions and finally demonstrate how recursion can be used to effectively solve a series of business problems. Forward by Amir Netz, Product Unit Manager, SQL Server - Analysis Services at Microsoft. A CD containing examples from within the book, and a time-limited version of ProClarity, is included.

it looks like there are not many books one can get about MDX.I just started to get into the subject and was desperate to find some useful information. This book provides you with all what you have to know in order to make your first steps with MDX. it is easy to read and the examples are well explained. if it happened that one has an analysis system available it's even better, so one can do some useful exercises. I realised that it is worth to read first the chapter and try really to understand the stuff before starting the exercises.one little thing, i missed a bit was a chapter where the functions are referenced.otherwise, this is the book to start MDX with in order to get fast reasults and to build up your pro skills!

While the book is a good introduction to MDX, as a developer I felt the book was too centered on a DBA's needs. The majority (from Ch. 5 through Ch. 17) concentrates on creating Calculated Members using the SQL Management Studio, as well as the various Wizards therein. While I can see this as being beneficial to the DBA while setting up the Cubes, a Calculated Member is just a small subset of what is involved in MDX. I was able to skip over the chapters pertaining to Security, Cell Colors and Actions without the worry of missing anything as it pertains to retrieving data from a Cube, to be presented to a user for analysis (unfortunately, only a couple of chapters cover the "query" aspect of MDX). I would have liked to see more complex query examples given and broken down; I'm sure there is more to MDX queries, even at an introductory level, than the basic SELECT...FROM...WHERE statements given. That said, the explanation of terms (tuples, sets, members, etc) at the beginning were extremely helpful for a beginner such as myself. The author covers a great deal of functions, however I think some of the descriptions were too simplistic for the intended audience(OLAP developers, DBAs and power OLAP users; in other words, people that have experience with basic functions like SUM and AVG, in either Excel, SQL QA, etc.).Also, a note for Kindle readers: The Kindle edition is the 1st Edition, even though the Product Details states 2nd Edition (October 15, 2005). The Kindle version is copyright 2002 and later reprinted in 2004, no 2 ed. mentioned. I didn't realize until it was too late...thanks, Amazon!

This is the perfect book for anyone with extensive experience writing SQL. The author immediately draws a distinction between the two but uses analogies to relational data throughout the book, easing the transition. There is enough humor throughout the book to keep the user engaged, but not so much to be distracting. I'm starting a new BI job in a week and having just finished this book and worked through some MS Virtual Labs, I'm really looking forward to jumping head-first into querying (and fixing) cubes for my new employer.Regarding other reviewers comments about a lack of depth, two things are obvious after reading this book:1) The book is appropriately called "Fast Track to MDX" and is not meant to be comprehensive.2) The author provides exactly enough depth to make it clear to the reader that MDX is highly functional, but not so much that you drown in jargon that isn't useful to a beginner. The first few chapters provide a great intro to dimensional data in general and then gracefully segue into specifics of the language. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to broaden their skillsets to land a new job or make themselves more valuable with their current employer. 5 stars indeed!

I have read and found "Fast Track to MDX" to be easier to read and understand. There are many charts, diagrams, documentations and pictures to help the reader. I have tried many of the MDX statements in the book with success. The book has explained many things in a very understandable way, including Lead, Lag, Filter, IIF, Distinct Count, Count, Member Properties, Current Member, Previous Member, Syntax usage and more. Also, to my amazement, the CD included is ProClarity v5. ProClarity is a very good tool compared to other viewers and very user friendly and powerful. This book is good for both the beginner and intermediate users.TC

Only giving it 3 stars because it's outdated. Did not notice before I bought that it covers SQL Server 2000 only. For a 2nd edition published in 2006, assumed it would cover SSAS 2005.Overall, the approach is good, with a clear explanation of the basics and building useful elements by starting simple and incrementally adding. But if you have 2005, there are serious drawbacks. The samples cannot be loaded into 2005. And, among other things, the syntax for time dimensions is incorrect. Apparently hierarchy names did not have to be specified in 2000, but do in 2005.If you're aware of lack of 2005 support, it still might be worth it. At least you'll do less head scratching than I did.

Fast Track to MDX is well written book that helps you get startet with MDX quick. It is easy to read and authors explain topics very well. Also examples are very good, easy to follow and focused to topic under discussion. If you are beginner or if you are working on your first serious SSAS project this book is worth to read for sure. There are some cons but their effect to reading experience is minimal. For me there was a little bit too much screenshots shown and same time explained what is shown on dialog windows. But maybe beginners need more advice. Also authors tend to repeat their points but if you are new to topic then it makes you think more about what you just read. The book doesn't contain any advanced or complex topics. If you are beginner or this is your first real SSAS project then I strongly recommend you to read this book.
