JIM SHEPARD is the author of six previous novels and four story collections, including Like You’d Understand, Anyway, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and won The Story Prize. His short fiction has appeared in, among other magazines, The New Yorker, Harper’s Magazine, McSweeney’s, The Paris Review, The Atlantic, Esquire, Tin House, Granta, Zoetrope, Electric Literature, and Vice, and has often been selected for The Best American Short Stories and The PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories. He lives in Williamstown, Massachusetts, with his wife and three children, and teaches at Williams College.

This book is based on true historical events: the tragic fate of Janusz Korczak. Told from the point of view of one of his children, the book promised a moving and engaging story.Unfortunately, it did not keep this promise. The main problem was the writing style. Although the historical facts were well-researched, the style was very bare-bones and simplistic. A great part of the dialogue was written in reported speech, the language was generally not particularly creative and often flat. The characters, too, were two-dimensional at best, making it difficult to empathize with them. Finally, the pacing was very uneven and somewhat chaotic. Scenes that should have been moving felt like little more than a dry report. Furthermore, several scenes including Janusz Korczak had dialogue that felt very forced: I had the feeling that the author greatly wanted to show Korczak saying certain things, but was unable to create a scene in which these dialogues fit naturally.All this is very unfortunate since the story's idea had a lot of potential. It is important not to forget the events of these turbulent historical times. However, I highly recommend those who are interested in this subject turn to other books (From the Ashes of Sobibor, The Final Journey, and Eyewitness Auschwitz, to name a few).
